Walk into the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Phoenix and you’ll notice two things immediately:
It’s beautiful.And something feels… off.
This isn’t just one of the most iconic historic theaters in Phoenix. It’s also one of the most well-known haunted locations in the city.

A Historic Theater That Still Has an Audience
Built in 1928, the Orpheum Theatre has hosted decades of performances—from vaudeville acts to concerts to modern shows. It was designed to captivate an audience. And according to many who’ve worked and performed there… it still does. Because even when the seats are empty, the theater doesn’t always feel that way.
Maddie in the Balcony
The most well-known spirit connected to the Orpheum is Maddie. She’s often seen in the balcony—watching the performance. Visitors, performers, and employees have all reported seeing her seated above, as if she’s still part of the audience. Some say she has a presence that feels… focused. Like she’s making sure people are paying attention.
The Ghost Cat (Yes, Really)
And then there’s something you don’t expect in a historic theater: A ghost cat. Children on tours have reported seeing a small shadow dart across the floor or through the aisles, only to disappear seconds later. Just quick movement where nothing should be.
One of the Most Haunted Places in Downtown Phoenix
The Orpheum isn’t just one of downtown Phoenix’s best-preserved historic buildings still in use today. It’s also haunted AF. That’s what makes it so good. People still come here for concerts, shows, and performances — while Maddie is reportedly watching from the balcony, making sure everyone is paying attention.
