Most people think Bigfoot belongs to the Pacific Northwest. Arizona would disagree. Deep in the forests of northern Arizona, stories have circulated for decades about a massive, foul-smelling creature stalking the wilderness near the Mogollon Rim. Witnesses describe something enormous, covered in dark hair, walking upright like a human — but definitely not human.
They call it the Mogollon Monster. And depending on who you ask, it’s either Arizona’s version of Bigfoot… or something far stranger.
What Is the Mogollon Monster?
The Mogollon Monster is a legendary cryptid said to roam the forests and mountains of central and northern Arizona, particularly around the Mogollon Rim. The creature is often compared to Sasquatch or Bigfoot due to its size, appearance, and behavior.
Descriptions of the Mogollon Monster usually include:
Standing between 7 and 8 feet tall
Covered in dark brown or black hair
Extremely muscular build
Strong, overwhelming odor
Large footprints
Deep growls, screams, or whistles
Human-like movement through the forest
Sightings have been reported for generations in areas near Payson, Heber, Show Low, Alpine, and other remote parts of Arizona’s Rim Country. And unlike some urban legends that faded away decades ago, reports of the Mogollon Monster still continue today.
The Boy Scout Story That Helped Name the Monster
One of the most famous stories connected to the Mogollon Monster comes from a Boy Scout camping trip in the 1940s. According to the legend, a teenage boy named Don Davis was camping near the Mogollon Rim when he woke up and saw something standing near his sleeping bag: a massive, hairy creature with deep-set eyes and a terrible smell. The creature didn’t attack him, but the encounter terrified him — and the story stuck. Because sightings were often connected to the Mogollon Rim, the creature became known as the Mogollon Monster: Arizona’s own version of Bigfoot.

Why the Mogollon Rim Feels So Creepy
If you’ve ever driven through northern Arizona at night, you already know the landscape can feel unsettling. The Mogollon Rim stretches for hundreds of miles across Arizona and is filled with dense forests, steep cliffs, isolated trails, and areas with little to no cell service. Once the sun goes down, the woods become unnervingly dark and quiet.
It’s the perfect setting for stories about something unknown lurking just beyond the trees.
And unlike heavily populated cities, there are still vast stretches of Arizona wilderness where people can disappear, get lost, or encounter things they can’t explain.
The Mogollon Monster and Arizona Folklore
Stories of mysterious humanoid creatures in the Southwest existed long before the internet.
Arizona has always been a place filled with legends, strange encounters, ghost stories, and unexplained phenomena. From the Superstition Mountains and the Lost Dutchman’s Gold Mine to UFO sightings and desert hauntings, the state has developed a reputation for the unexplained.
The Mogollon Monster fits naturally into that history. Whether viewed as folklore, cryptozoology, or modern mythology, the creature has become one of Arizona’s most famous cryptids.
